Geospatial Research and Education Lab (GREL) has been established at Department of Space Science, Institute of Space Technology (IST) with the vision of doing quality research and imparting state of the art education in the emerging fields of Geographic Information Science (GISc) and Remote Sensing (RS).

Our aim is to to attain an international reputation as a center of excellence in GISc, RS and integrated technologies. GREL is the first OSGeo lab in Pakistan having objectives;

  • To engage in geospatial research, education and development using Free and Open Source Software for Geoinformatics (FOSS4G) and contributing actively to the development of open source software tools, standards and data through research and innovation.
  • To establish international linkages for collaborative research, education and training. To offer both degree (undergraduate, graduate) and certificate courses in GISc, RS and associated fields.
  • To ensure sustainable growth and expansion by acquiring national and international funding for short term and long term real world projects that impact society.
  • To bridge the gap between academia, industry, government and nongovernment organizations for collaborative research and development, providing internship and job opportunities for students, and encouraging entrepreneurship through commercially exploitable research and development.

MS in RemoteSensing and GIScience-Fall2016

Faculty Positions Open: GREL is actively on the lookout for qualified PhD faculty in RS & GISc. If you are interested to apply to be part of this vibrant faculty, just contact Dr. Rizwan Bulbul or Dr. Waqas Qazi.

(04-07-16) GREL faculty member Dr. Rizwan Bulbul and MS student Ahsan Abbas recently completed formal scientific and technical review of the book "GeoProcessing with Python." This included testing the code, identifying / removing bugs, and identifying / installing required libraries.

(23-06-16) GREL is launching the 2nd Summer School on Earth Remote Sensing with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). This course will be led by Dr. Waqas A. Qazi, from 1-5th Jan., 2016. Detailed course info and registration is available here. Last date for registration: 20th July, 2016.

(12-05-16) Dr. Majid Nazeer, recent PhD graduate from Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, will be delivering a guest talk on Atmospheric Correction of Remote Sensing Imagery and Coastal Water Quality Applications at GREL Lab, tomorrow, 13th May, from 10:30 AM to 12 PM.

(22-04-16) Forest ground survey was conducted by GREL team from 18-20th April for undergrad Final Year Project. The survey team was led by Dr. Waqas A. Qazi and Mr. Naeem Shahzad, and included 1 MS and 2 BS students. The survey was conducted in Ghora Ghali forest, Murree Forest Division, with the support of Forest Dept., Govt. of the Punjab. Plot survey methodology was used and tree DBH / height were measured. These surveyed plots will be used for regression modeling with remote sensing data for forest AGB estimation.

 (23-12-15) GREL is launching its 1st Workshop on Workshop on Data Analysis Techniquesfor Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Science using MATLAB . This course will be led by Dr. Waqas A. Qazi, from 25-29th Jan., 2016. Detailed course info and registration is available here. Last date for registration: 18th Jan., 2016.

 (27-11-15) ESA has accepted a Cat-1 research proposal by Dr. Waqas A. Qazi to study and analyse landslides and slope stability in KPK post-2005 Kashmir earthquake. ESA has granted a quote of 180 SAR images from Envisat ASAR for the research. As part of this research, repeat-pass InSAR processing will be developed and implemented in-house at GREL.
